Barflies

Inspired by Schrader's gritty black comedy Barfly, which is based on the life of Charles Bukowski and his experiences as a wandering alcoholic, I decided to document my own encounters with the many dive bars I visited throughout my time in South America.

After my Olympus OM10 35mm camera was destroyed by a falling coconut on the beach, I had no choice but to recreate the images of bars, jungles, and people from memory, using only words to capture what the lens no longer could.

You see a lot in a dive bar. You learn a lot too.
